The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) on April 4, 2023 as part of celebratimg the 25th anniversary of utility regulation in Ghana, put together a consumer clinic where an opportunity was offered to utility comsumers to air their views regarding the various utilities they been consuming. It was also an avenue for the Ghana Water Company Limited and the NEDCo/VRA management to also interact with the public and understand the needs of the consumer in order to provide quality services that meet such needs.
PURC has been instrumental in ensuring fair and efficient regulation of the utilities sector in Ghana for the past 25 years.
The Commission held its customer service clinic in Wa as part of celebrating its 25 years of Utility Regulation that is centered on ensuring the provision of good quality water and electricity services including fair pricing, consumer protection, and resolutions of complaints.
PURC as part of its functions plays critical role in promoting the provision of high-quality and affordable utility services to Ghanaians. Through its regulatory activities, the commission has helped to establish a level playing field for all players in the utilities sector, ensuring that consumers are protected from exploitation whereas service providers are motivated to invest in their infrastructure and improve service delivery.Addressing the gathering in Wa, regional capital of the Upper West Region, Engineer Francis Yormesor, Wa Area Manager of VRA/Nedco said “It gives me great pleasure to join you all today as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). As the Area Manager, I am proud to be part of an organization that has played such a critical role in promoting fair and efficient regulation of the utilities sector in Ghana”.
He continues “as we celebrate this milestone, it is worth reflecting on the achievements that have been made in the sector over the past 25 years. We have seen significant improvements in the quality and reliability of utility services in Ghana, and PURC has played a crucial role in making this happen. However, we must not rest on our laurels. There are still challenges ahead, including the need to promote further investment in the energy and water sectors, to address the issue of power outages and to ensure that service delivery continues to improve for all Ghanaians’’ he stated.
Meanwhile, Cletus Ba-Emase Diekuu, Upper West Regional Water Quality Manager/ Ag. Production Manager for Ghana Water Company Limited was optimistic that the commission will.continue to shape the utilities sector and does urged management of PURC to continue to improve upon their good services for the benefit of both service providers and consumers.
“As we look to the future, I am confident that PURC will continue to play a vital role in shaping the utilities sector in Ghana, and I look forward to working with all of you to ensure that we continue to make progress in delivering high-quality and affordable utility services to all Ghanaians. The ocation brought together heads of various institutions and departments, stakeholders, customers, among others and an opportunity was given to the audience who shared their concerns and grievances and responses were accordingly provided.
