Students of the Wa Islamic Girls Senior High School in the Upper West region besieged the Upper West Regional Police headquarters Monday evening June 21, 2021 demanding the release of their teachers who were arrested by the police for an alleged assault of a young man who was caught reportedly trying to rape one of the students.
According to reports the suspected rapist who was identified by the students a day after he attempted raping one of the students was arrested and handed over to the police and after he was released on police enquiry bail, the suspect only identified as Sharon also reported to the police that he was assaulted by some of the teachers of the school hence the arrest of the pinpointed teachers.
The students who besieged the regional police headquarters in their uniform were spotted chanting “we want justice! We want justice!!” in a form of solidarity, were also demanding for the release of the three teachers. The police in their bid to respond led to a confrontation between them and the students and four of the girls were arrested and later released by the police.
According to the Upper West Regional Crime officer, Real Metew the four students that were arrested by the police as of the time the confrontation ensued, were only sent to the station to ensure calmness and stressed that the teachers too have been released on police inquiry bail.
The Crime officer says the police are now dealing with two cases the alleged rape case and the assaulted case been filed by the suspected rapists who alleged that the three teachers of the school assaulted him when he was arrested.
