Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament RT.HON.ALBAN SUMANA KINGSFORD BAGBIN in collaboration with the Nadowli District Hospital on Friday, September 24, 2021 organized a blood donation exercise as part of activities to mark the 64th birthday celebration of the speaker.
The exercise dubbed “DONATE TO SAVE A LIFE” was to collect blood to stock the blood bank of the Nadowli District Hospital.
Speaking to Radio Waa, Madam Phoebe Bala, Nadowli/Kaleo District Health Director, described the blood donation exercise as a lifesaving intervention. “The escalating elective surgery, road traffic accidents, snake bites, high prevalence of anemia especially due to malaria and pregnancy related complications are some major reasons why blood remains a very much vital but limited asset to the healthcare delivery in the Nadowli Hospital”.
She was worried about the predominance of family replacement and economically remunerated blood donors, rather than the regular benevolent, non- remunerated donors who give blood out of altruism.
Madam Phoebe indicated that, stakeholders have a significant responsibility to ensure the availability to the world class precious product in a bid to saving lives. She was full of praises to the Speaker for his continuous support to ensuring the delivery of quality healthcare to the good people of Nadowli/Kaleo District and beyond.
“This initiative by the speaker is phenomenal and timely as the hospital needs an average of eighty units of blood monthly and it is important to sustain it” she stressed.
Meanwhile, Mr. Lord Micheal Baatuolkuu, Special Assistant at the office of the speaker said, Ghanaians ought to emulate the exemplary life of the Speaker. Quoting a former first lady for the United States of America” One of the lessons I grew up with, was to always stay through to yourself and never let what somebody else do to distract you from your goals”. He likened this to the spirit of Rt.Hon. Alban Bagbin.
Mr. Lord associated the life of the speaker to that of the founder and first president of Ghana, Dr. Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah and added that “Ghana was celebrating a new generation of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah without noticing”.
The occasion also witnessed some donation of non-alcoholic beverages, Biscuits, and some toiletries to the Nadowli District Hospital by the Rt.Hon Alban Sumana Bagbin. Citizens across the length and breadth of the district were present the celebrate the new age of the Rt. Hon Alban S. K. Bagbin.
