Management of the Wechiua Hippo Sanctuary has sent strong warning to group hunters and poachers who invade into the Wechiau community Hippo sanctuary to stop it or incur the wrath of the sanctuary rangers who are ready to contend with recalcitrant hunters.
Alhaj Sumani Kassim, Board Chairman of the sanctuary in a statement issued on May 2,2020 indicated that hunters who do group hunting have started extending entry into the 40k/m square area for poaching which endangers the lives of the natural resources especially the hippopotamus and some other wild animals.
“It has come to the notice of the management board of the Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary that, people have constituted themselves into hunting groups and have extended their hunting activities to the Wa West district especially the Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary catchment area. The management would like to inform the general public and the hunting groups that the area lies along the Black Volta and extends from Bamkpama through Mwaleyiri, Kantu, Kpanfa, Talawona, Tankara, Donpile and ends at Dochera where the Wa West district shares border with the northern region is a protected area. The area which covers about 40k/m square miles is prohibited from hunting, poaching, logging and fishing etc. Management board therefore wishes to appeal to individuals and all hunting groups to keep off from this community resource management area to avoid confrontation with the sanctuary guards” he noted.
He also extended warning to drivers who hire out their vehicles to the hunters to start a refraining from such as the board is ready to crack the whip by ceasing such vehicles for further actions.
“Vehicles owners and drivers who hire their vehicles to the hunters and carry them to the place should desist from doing that to avoid the seizure of their vehicles when caught. We hope organisers of such hunting groups would consider our plea for us to continue to enjoy peace” the statement added.
