The Ghana Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) have called on the media to stop advertising cosmetic products that are not approved by the authority. The FDA noted that, they are a lot of cosmetic products in the market that have not been approved by the authority adding that, the FDA will soon stage war against the abusers and let the law take its course. This called was made to Journalists in Wa, the regional capital of the Upper West Region on Wednesday August 15, 2018 during a media engagement organised by the authority.
Mr. Emmanuel Nkrumah, Head of cosmetics and household chemical substance department of the Food and Drugs Authority, addressing the media, noted that, many Ghanaians especially the youth are causing more harm to themselves by way of bleaching their skins with some of the unapproved cosmetic products. He said, the authority in recent times have come to observe that, many youth are now lightening their lips with some of these unapproved substance toting that, many who are always in a haste to get their lips lighten, mix a lot of cosmetic products with other chemicals which can cause serious havoc to their skins.
“Now there is a new trend, I don’t know what is wrong with our youth, lip lightening, they want to lighten their lips, and the dangerous thing is, lightening your lips in two weeks, when we have lip stick, lip shine and lip glue and they are approved products for the use of the lips, so there is no approved products that can lighten your lips in two weeks or a month, it is dangerous. The funny thing is that, people are mixing all sort of products and using akpeteshie and all that, akpeteshie is not an ingredient for cosmetics, so why will people do that” he indicated.
He further revealed that, some people are hiding under the armpit of social media to advertise some of these unapproved products noting that, the said act is criminal and urges those who are into such act to stop or be ready to face the law. “People are hiding behind social media and carrying out all these diabolic activities and the FDA has not even approve any other, because before advertise any product it has to be approved by the FDA and one of the conditions for giving approval to any product if you look at our approval letter is that, it states that this product cannot be advertise prior approval from the FDA, so why do you advertise on facebook, whatsApp and social media without the approval of the FDA, it is against the law” Mr Nkrumah added.
However, Mr. Emmanuel Nkrumah appealed to Journalists to help educate citizens on the adverse effects of this practice and also admonished the general public to desist from acts that can cause damage to their skins and again stated categorically that, they will soon crack the whip on those who might want to prove recalcitrant.
