As part of congratulating professor Naana Jean Opoku Agyemang on her recent appointment by the NDC’s flagbearer former President John Dramani Mahama as running mate for the largest opposition party, Mr. Augustus Goosie Tanoh one of the stalwarts of the National Democratic Congress has revealed that, the recent elevation of Prof Jean has been an unshakable commitment to the cause of Ghana and Africa in both political and social dispensations.
“Naana brings an unshakable commitment to the cause of Ghana and Africa; sterling achievements in education and politics; profound humility and commitment to social equality; excellent inter-personal and cultural skills; and unquestionable personal dignity and integrity. She fully deserves the incredibly high esteem in which she is held by so many people across the length and breadth of our country. It is a comfort to know that there will be somebody of her intellect, strategic capacity, and discipline standing at President Mahama’s side through the 2020 campaign and our next term in Government”.
He said the appointment of Prof. Jean as running mate was a signal sent to women both in the NDC and the country at large to endeavor for higher positions base on their achievements, also bringing in equality as a measure to further strengthen the democracy NDC has always uphold.
“I am also proud that the NDC has shown the conviction and courage to concretise our belief in democracy and gender equality in this way. In selecting Prof Opoku-Agyemang we honour all the women who make up 51% of our population and our electorate, and who by and large as smallholder (peasant) farmers, small traders and processors (fish etc) are responsible for the food we receive on our table every day. Without such contributions no aspect of our lives is viable. I am convinced that Naana’s appointment is not tokenism, but a signal to all the women in the NDC and across the country to intensify struggles to achieve a great leap forward in equity for all”.
Goosie Tanoh in a statement extends his gratitude to the founder of the NDC, H.E Jerry John Rawlings, H.E John Dramani Mahama and the party elders including the rank and file of the party for using their wisdom in coming out with Prof Jean Naana Opoku Agymang describing her as the perfect choice.
“I also congratulate President John Dramani Mahama, President Jerry John Rawlings, the Council of Elders and the National Executive Committee for the wisdom and vision that they have shown in this nomination and endorsement process” the statement added.
