The chief of Eremon, Naa Volkur Nyour Tang IV has called for the establishment of a groundnut processing factory in Eremon in the Lawra Municipality of the Upper West.
According to him the people of Eremon are mainly groundnut farmers and produce a lot of groundnut. Naa Nyour Tang said it was unfortunate that every year most of the produce from farmers go waste due to the lack of a processing factory. He said when established, he factory would erve farmers both in and around the community.
Naa Nyour Volkur said the great importance attached to groundnut by its farmers in the community has led to the celebration of the Senkaa (groundnut) festival every year for past 6 years.
He again noted that an NGO called RESULT established a small-scale groundnut oil extraction industry in the area in order to realise the optimum benefits of the raw groundnut produce but the lack of financial support had led to the collapse of the industry. He thus charged the next NDC government to consider establishing a groundnut processing factory.
“Eremon celebrates a festival called Senkaa festival. It has been in existence for the past 6years and counting. It acts as a way of ushering in developments reflecting on the needs of our community. Some communities such as Dazuri, Zimpen and Naburnye through the support of an NGO (RESULT), established a small scale groundnut oil extraction industry in order to gain optimum benefits from the raw products and also to increase the income level of the farmers. However, for lack of financial support, it is sad to mention that these laudable projects in the said communities have been abandoned. It is therefore hoped that when in power, your government will take advantage in creating a groundnut factory that will process groundnut into products for local consumption and for the export market.
The Chief made the appeal to former president who doubles as 2020 presidential candidate for the NDC H.E John Dramani Mahama on Saturday September 5, 2020 during a visit made to the community by former president as part his 4-day tour of the Upper West Region.
Meanwhile, a former Upper West Regional Minister also NDC parliamentary candidate for the Lawra constituency Hon. Bede Ziedong addressing party faithful at the community mentioned that the NDC is determined to take back the Lawra constituency seat from the incumbent NPP Member of Parliament stressing that, the party lost the seat as a result of some internal wranglings within the party in the constituency. Mr Ziedong was quick to add that those frictions have been ironed out.
